This term we have being learning about numbers. We have worked with a partner and in groups to identify, sequence and represent numbers between 0 and 20.
Do you know a quick way to make a number between 0-20? Do you know how to count on? If not, I can tell you! Maybe you could ask me after dinner??
NUMICON SHAPES
What is Numicon? Lets have a look....http://www.numicon.com/
We have been using numicon shapes to help us learn about number. Our teachers gave each of us a bag of numicon shapes and asked us to explore them. Here we are exploring/questioning/investigating and discovering how these shapes relate to number!!
Here are some of our initial thoughts:-
Once we discovered that each shape represented a number we were able to start thinking about how we could order the shapes. Some of us ordered the shapes from largest to smallest, some from smallest to largest and others just from 1-10. It was interesting to see how many different ways there were to order the numbers from 0-10.
Another challenge we had to face was to work with a partner and find a way to place all of our numicon pieces on a numicon board without leaving any spaces. We had to think about what shapes would fit together and what numbers could be joined to cover another number of spaces. Well guess what...after lost of tries and discussion, and of course great team work, we DID IT!!! We are so proud of ourselves.
Patterns
This week we have begun to discuss what the term "Pattern" means.
- How do we know what a pattern is or looks like?
- How do we create patterns?
- How do we continue a pattern that has already been started?
- Are all patterns the same?
The teachers gave us lots of different materials to explore with. They gave us australian animals, shapes, counters, paddle pop sticks, teddy bears and blocks. We needed to use these materials to investigate and explore how we could make patterns and what we though a pattern was. I wonder if you can see some of the patterns that we were creating through our explorative play??
2D Shapes
We had lots of fun working together to create and explore using pipe cleaners. Our teachers took photos of our creations and we looked at them on the interactive white board to discuss what lines and shapes we could find. See below to discover what we came up with!
