Inquiry
This term in Inquiry we are answering the question "Can we live alone?" "How do we know we are not alone? We are learning about Community and how we are part of different communities.

Here are some of our original thoughts about two smaller contributing questions we are exploring and investigating ...   What is belonging? What is a village?

Through our ignite phase, some of us discussed how we believe that belonging is like having our own Mother Teresa Garden and our own Kindergarten garden. We also linked this earning to our Religion unit "God Loves Me". We believe that each plant, flower, seed, vegetable or fruit is just like us. Created by God to be unique and special. Just like we need love and food to grow so do our gardens. they need us to look after them, give them water and sunshine and then they will grow just like us. Our kindergarten garden at the back of our room belongs to us but our little garden near the playground is part of the Mother Teresa community. It belongs to the whole community and we work together to look after it.

Here are some photos of our gardens and us hard at work planting God's unique plants.

Our Kindergarten Garden - lots of basil, parsley, rosemary, lettuce, carrots and strawberries!!!

First we have to turn the soil.

Then we make some holes to plant our seeds and seedlings.

Next we put our seedlings and seeds in the hole and cover the hole with soil.

Finally we water our garden.

13/3/13 Our garden is growing and we are excited. we can't wait to eat some strawberries, lettuce, carrots and cucumbers during fruit break. We are also looking forward to starting to use some of our herbs. Yesterday we saw our first strawberry..the photo is on its way. While looking at our garden we wondered about many things. Some of our 'I wonder' questions were:-

I wonder.....
  1. what is eating our cucumber leaves? - Michael
  2. if there are any worms are in our garden? - Moksh or ants? - Kailan - or maybe a caterpillar? - Jonah
  3. why our cucumber leaves look yellow and brown? - Thalia
  4. Maybe it is getting too much water - Jonah - or maybe too much sun - Nyssa
  5. what other animals we might find in our garden? - Annie - i think we will find insects - Marcus
  6. I wonder if the same animal will eat our herbs? - Jean and Marcus
  7. if the sun is changing the colour of the leaves and making the leaves and plant die? - Jonah
  8. what makes the garden grow?- Aayan
  9. if we will see snails in our garden? - John-Luke
  10. if we are putting too much soil on our plants and they are not alive anymore? - Andy
  11. when we will see the fruit? - Giselle
  12. if cockroaches eat plants and flowers in gardens? - Daniella
  13. if the birds are coming to eat the plants at night? -Jhetrelle
  14. How do the plants stay tall and green? - Isabelle
  15. when we can start to eat the fruit and vegetables? - Kailan
  16. why the herbs are not being eaten? - Peter
  17. I can see a strawberry - Alannah
I WONDER what questions you might have for us about our gardens? Remember we have a Herb Garden, Fruit and Vegetables Garden and a Flower Garden.

Our little patch of the Mother Teresa Community Garden - lots of lovely flowers!!!

During Week 5 we looked at two artworks by the artist Charles Blackman". We learnt that artists use paintings to tell people how they feel or to show how people feel.

Here are the two artworks we looked at and discussed.

1. 'The Shadow'

2. 'Two Girls weeping in Night'

Here our our thoughts about the two pieces of art and what we think the represent.

Our next task or challenge was to create our own representation of being alone by using either play dough or sketching our representation. To begin with we had to use drama and our body to show how we would look and feel if we were alone. The teachers then took a photo of us presenting our alone drama pose. We then looked at our photos and used them to guide our artwork. Take a look at some of our representations of being alone through the use of playdough.
